Step 2 - Roles and Responsibilities

A specific member of staff should be allocated responsibility for implementing the Travel Plan and given adequate time and resources to implement it. Some tasks may fall under the existing work areas of facilities managers or fleet controllers but for a large organisation a full time Travel Plan Co-ordinator post will be justified.

The Travel Plan Coordinator will have responsibility for:

  • Conducting a staff travel survey
  • Setting up and administering a car share scheme
  • Liaising with public transport operators and local authorities
  • Improving walking and cycling facilities
  • Setting up incentive schemes
  • Communicating the Travel Plan
  • Introducing a car parking management system and enforcing it
  • Monitoring and reporting progress against targets

Steering Group

This should be formed from representatives of the various different departments and senior management.

Useful members of the group may include: the facilities manager, personnel manager and managers of any department whose work generates business mileage.

Partnerships

Contact us for information on other organisations in your area that have developed Travel Plans.

Working in partnership with other organisations, the local community and the local authority is the key to a successful Travel Plan. For example, companies located on a business park could collaborate to produce shared travel information and marketing materials.

Partnerships can also assist with the development and implementation of Travel Plans by enabling a common voice during negotiations with transport providers and local authorities.

Transport Groups

Groups representing the different transport modes should be created to make sure that the user views for each type of transport is given consideration when developing the Travel Plan.

Such groups may include: Bicycle User Group, Walking Action Group, Public Transport User Group, Motorcycle User Group and Car Share Club.

These groups will provide an opportunity for staff to discuss and share experiences, either in regular meetings or via online forums and take ownership of the Travel Plan process.
