Step 7 - Monitoring

Travel Plan monitoring must be undertaken to assess achievements against the targets that have been set. It is essential that resources for monitoring are allocated in the Travel Plan budget.

Monitoring Tools

Examples could include analysing monthly business mileage, financial management information or conducting intermittent snapshot surveys of travel patterns.

These surveys can be less extensive than the original travel survey and should be carried out during spring and autumn to avoid school holiday periods. Contact us for a free online staff travel survey.

 Frequency of Monitoring

Monitoring should be carried out every year and then full surveys every 2 to 5 years.

If the Travel Plan forms part of a planning condition it may be necessary to tie-in or agree monitoring proceedures with the annual meeting with the Local Authority.

Performance Indicators

These could include the following:

  • Traffic levels at site entrances
  • Level of public transport usage
  • Level of car park income
  • Numbers of people car sharing
  • Numbers of cycles parked on site
  • Numbers of staff registered with transport interest groups, eg bike users group or car share database.
