Smarter Working Measures

Flexibility

Allowing staff to begin and leave work at differing times helps to limit congestion and overcrowding. This has the added bonus of aiding organisations to extend their availability times.

Compressed Working Week

Staff are allowed to work more of their allotted hours per day for a day off during the week. This has the positive effect of reducing car parking constraints and congestion.

Home Working

Enabling staff to work from home on a full or part time basis has benefits for both employer and staff. If at home for one day a fortnight, staff can reduce the company travel by 10%, reducing its carbon imprint. It also frees more desks, parking spaces and limits congestion.

Tele-working

Organisations should use greater phone and video conferencing instead of face to face meetings.

Measures to encourage this include:

  •  conference phones in all meeting rooms
  •  training for staff on conference calling
  •  easy to use video conference suites with knowledgeable members of staff
  • specific training on chairing phone or video conferences

Only when it is decided other methods are inappropriate should business mileage be paid for.

Policies

Organisations may need to develop new policies when introducing Smarter Working measures. Contact us for further information and advice. These include Health and Safety help for those working from home. Please contact the Health and Safety Executive and see the guide to Homeworking.
