Walking and a Travel Plan

Encouraging walking doesn't need expensive measures; simple steps can be very effective in demonstrating your organisation's commitment to walking.

Easy ways

  • Umbrellas by the door will encourage fair weather walkers - add a company logo and you have free advertising.
  • Foster a walking culture by initiating lunch time walks - promote these events as social activities.
  •  Ask staff what would encourage them to walk - contact us for a free staff travel survey template
  • Promote walk to work days allowing staff to dress down or arrive 5 minutes later. If possible link these to national events, click here for a sustainable travel event calender.

Raise awareness

  • Provide maps of walking routes with journey times; people may be suprised how far they can walk in 10 minutes.
  • Raise awareness of the health benefits of walking - a brisk walk can be as effective as running the same distance.

Maintainance

  • Make sure footpaths to and on the site are direct, well lit and well maintained. This includes links to bus stops and railway stations.
  • Make sure that signs for pedestrians are clear.
  • Talk to the local authority about improving the routes your employees use - click here for local authorities in South East Wales.

Facilities and provisions

  • Facilities for walkers can also encourage cycling and increased public transport use. Walkers (and cyclists) will appreciate the provision of storage lockers and if possible a drying room.
  • Demonstrate your commitment to walking by giving employees umbrellas, pedometers, high visibilty vests and personal alarms.

Car parking and flexible working

  • Restrict car parking to those who live further than 2 miles away and allow flexibility over arrival and finish times. To find out how other organisations in South East Wales have done this click here.
