News - Beach path benefits from further investment

A new path and cycleway that links Llantwit Major and the beach has seen further improvements to make it even safer and more enjoyable for users
The path opened in April this year to provide a much-needed link between the town and beach. It has provided a useful, safe and clean route which is wider and has better visibility, helping to reduce the risk of pedestrian and cycling accidents. A green non-slip surface coating and timber edgings help the path blend into its surroundings.
However, since it opened, there have been reports of vehicles accessing the adjoining meadow and crossing the path which has raised safety concerns. The new works have seen large boulders put in place to prevent this problem arising in the future.
Cllr Jeff James, cabinet member for planning and transportation, Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: "Having opened the path and cycleway in the spring, it was regrettable that there were instances of motor vehicles being able to access the meadow and crossing the new path which could potentially result in an accident and certainly would damage the path itself. It was important that the council took steps to try and prevent such actions and I am hopeful that this recent work will prevent a reoccurrence of such problems".
The new path and cycleway was installed by the Vale of Glamorgan Council using grant funding from the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Safe Routes in Communities’ initiative. Funding was awarded following the involvement of the local community and footpath forum who put forward a bid for consideration.
