News - Enjoy a free bike ride
13th July 2011
A free bike ride along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal to Risca and back will take place on Saturday 16 July
The ride has been organised by volunteers from charity Sustrans and is sponsored by leading bike retailer Specialized.
It will take place along mostly traffic-free routes and will last around four hours, including a lunch stop at a café in Risca and lots of rest stops along the way.
David McAllister, one of the Sustrans volunteers organising the ride, said: “We’re midway through a summer season of bike rides around Newport that are designed to help people discover how enjoyable it can be to travel by bike. It’s a great way to experience the local area, be active and meet people, so we’re looking forward to lots of people joining us.”
There are enormous health benefits to taking up cycling. An average 30 minute cycle burns around 186 calories and regular cycling can help to prevent obesity and related illnesses like Type 2 diabetes.
It can also help reduce the risk of strokes, hypertension and heart disease. Even arthritis and osteoporosis can be improved, with people who are regularly active experiencing less pain and improved mobility.
Anyone wishing to take part in the ride should meet at the Riverfront Theatre in Newport at 10.30am on Saturday 16 July. To find out more contact freshairmiles@sustrans.org.uk
