News - New cycle links for Penarth

25th October 2010

The Vale of Glamorgan's first ever contra-flow cycle lane is set to be implemented in Penarth in January 2011

The scheme, designed by the Vale of Glamorgan Council, has been worked up following an assessment of the recently introduced one way and parking scheme implemented in Penarth town centre and following analysis of current arrangements.

Cllr Jeffery James, Cabinet Member for Planning and Transportation, said:

"I am pleased to announce that a scheme has been developed and is in place for the Arcot Street contra-flow and the continued links northwards for cyclists. Developing this link has been a longstanding aspiration of this council and I am delighted that it’s designed and ready for implementation."

In terms of timescale, Cllr James, who also chairs a local steering group established to assess and develop links to Pont y Werin, added:

"I have asked that the works be scheduled as soon as possible. This is likely to be early in the New Year so as to avoid Christmas traffic and negatively impacting on trade during a critical time for Penarth’s businesses. The scheme is identified as a core route linking with Pont y Werin and will ensure that continued good progress is made on the provision of cycling links within Penarth."

In addition, the council is also undertaking early feasibility work on the key junctions at Windsor Road and Plassey Street and Windsor Road and Terra Nova Way with a view to improving performance for all road users.

Cllr James said: "I am also encouraged that feasibility work is to commence on these key junctions with a view to looking at the needs of all road users. I’m eager that any improvement scheme allows for a safe, secure walking and cycling route to Pont y Werin in addition to improvements for motorists."
