News - Porth Railway Station Consultation
30th January 2012
Plans are being prepared to revamp Porth Railway Station thanks to Rhondda Cynon Taf Council and its partners
Proposals include a new station building, ticket office, waiting room, public toilet, retail outlet, the provision of a new station Park & Ride facility, passenger shelter, waiting canopy, ticket machine, help point, and sheltered cycle stands. Improvements will also be made to the station’s fencing, seating provision, platform lighting, signage, information boards and CCTV.
Before these proposals can become a reality the Council and its partners, Welsh Government, Sewta (South East Wales Transport Alliance), Network Rail and Arriva Trains Wales are asking rail passengers and local residents to play an important role in the changes by asking them to come forward and give their views.
The special consultation exhibition is set to take place on Thursday 9th February from 10:00am until 8:00pm at the Alec Jones Day Centre, Porth. The centre will be fitted with large-scale plans and architect’s impressions of how Porth Railway Station improvement proposals could look and the designers will be on hand to discuss the plans. Once the details of the scheme are finalised, a bid will be submitted for grant funding to enable the scheme to be implemented. If this is successful the works will be complete by 2014.
Cabinet Member for Transport, Customer Care and Emergency Planning and Chair of Sewta, Councillor Andrew Morgan said: “The proposed improvements to Porth Station will make the station much more attractive for rail users and build upon the improvements to the regional rail network already undertaken, increasing rail use and reducing private car use on the congested road network in south east Wales.”
Funding for the proposals is being sought via the Wales Station Improvement Programme (NSIP+) which aims to improve the provision of and access to rail services by 2014.
The Main objective of the NSIP+ is to increase the number of passenger kilometres on rail; and improve the interchange with other transport modes.
This project is just one of five rail schemes which are being progressed by Rhondda Cynon Taf Council in partnership with the Welsh Government, Sewta (South East Wales Transport Alliance), Network Rail and Arriva Trains Wales.
If you are unable to attend the exhibition, leaflets describing the proposals can also be obtained from Porth Rail Station, the library on Pontypridd Road, the Post Office on Hannah Street, and the Council’s One4all centre. The exhibition (unmanned) will be available to view at the library from Saturday 11th February until Wednesday 22nd February 2012.
