News - Vale transport schemes set for "significant investment"

1st April 2010

Transport schemes in the Vale of Glamorgan are set to benefit from "significant investment" over the next five years

Welcoming rail, bus and road schemes included in the Welsh Assembly Government's National Transport Plan, Vale councillor Jeffrey James, cabinet member for planning and transportation, said: "All the schemes will improve access to the key settlement of Barry and will assist passengers when travelling to and from Cardiff Airport."

The schemes include:

  • the introduction of additional half hourly services on the Vale of Glamorgan railway line which will facilitate improved access to Cardiff Airport - due to commence following Network Rail's Cardiff area resignalling scheme in 2014;
  • an additional platform at Barry Station planned for commencement in 2014;
  • the introduction of a high quality express bus service between Cardiff and Cardiff Airport, and
  • the Welsh Assembly taking forward with the Vale Council road safety improvements on the A4226 Five-Mile Lane to Barry.

Noting that the Vale will benefit from significant investment during the lifetime of the plan, Cllr James, who is also chairman of the South East Wales Transport Alliance, added: "I am particularly pleased with the announcement of the additional train services on the Vale of Glamorgan railway line. This scheme has been promoted for a number of years by both Sewta and the Vale Council and will benefit Rhoose and Llantwit Major residents as well as travellers using Cardiff Airport."
