News - Walking and cycling improvements in the Llynfi Valley

19th July 2010

Two new schemes designed to encourage people in the Llynfi Valley to walk and cycle more have been revealed by Bridgend County Borough Council

Exhibitions held at Maesteg Comprehensive, Caerau Primary School and Maesteg Town Hall gave members of the public a chance to comment on the proposals and speak to officers from the council's transportation section.

The Maesteg Comprehensive School Safe Routes in Communities project will introduce improvements identified in a travel plan produced by the school.

They include a path for pedestrians and cyclists from Cwrt-y-Mwnws to the cycle shelters near the school entrance, widening of the existing path linking Ffordd Dysgu to South Parade and a new section of footway on Crown Road.

The Llynfi Valley Community Route forms part of the Sustrans Valleys Cycle Network funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG).

It will eventually provide a walking and cycling route between Maesteg and Croeserw at the top of the Llynfi Valley, with links into Neath Port Talbot and the Afan Forest Park.

The first section of this route - between Maesteg and Caerau - will enable more people to walk or cycle when accessing education, employment and leisure facilities
