International Rectifier

International Rectifier participated in the Sustainable Travel Grant Programme in 2010 and obtained funding to build an airing room and to create a cyclists emergency kit.

These ideas came from our Bicycle Users Group, which had been set up following the results of our initial travel to work survey.

The airing room is to enable employees who walk, cycle or use public transport to hang items of damp clothing in a secure location where they will dry. Feedback from users indicate that this is working well and is deemed a great success.

The cyclists emergency kit comprises a tool kit, bicycle pump, cycle tyre inner tubes and bicycle chain spare links which staff can borrow to effect repairs to their bicycles at work. Items from the kit have been used by a few people, who have subsequently been able to ride home again at the end of their working day when they would not otherwise have been able to do so.

Anecdotal evidence would suggest more people are now cycling to work and we have installed additional cycle racks. We are very pleased that the facilities we have been able to provide because of the STGP have played an important role in this process.

Quotes from IR Newport airing room users

Dave: “I use it 2-3 times/week whenever I ride my bike to work. The benefits I gain from the airing room include: somewhere to store my kit during the day and the main benefit for me is having dry kit to put on at the end of the day for the cycle home.”

Rob: “It’s a great facility. I have no problems cycling in the worst weather knowing my clothes will be dry again for the cycle home. In the past I may have taken the 4 wheeled option on a rainy day. ”

Martyn: “Just a quickie to say many thanks for the efforts you, Andy and the rest of the BUG team have put in to setting up the drying room. As the weather is often quite different when I leave home to when I arrive at the Park and Ride carpark, I know I can load the bike up with confidence as my kit will be dry in good time to cycle back to the car.”

Hugo: “There’s nothing quite like climbing into a pair of rain soggy shorts to trudge home in. But now with the new drying room that’s no longer possible. Warm dry and happy.”

Richard: “Great facility. Plenty of storage space in secure area. Easy access and conveniently located next to both bike racks and showers. ”

Andy: “The airing room is a godsend – what a difference to at least start the return journey in a dry and comfortable state!!!
…… the dry might not always last with the welsh weather
……..and the comfortable might not last as my saddle seems to turn into a razor about ½ way home ……but it’s a nice start.
Really has encouraged me to cycle more and I’m enjoying it ….who would have thought it!!”
